Terrific Turnout at 2014 Easter Regatta

A great fleet of 60 offbeach boats spent the long weekend participating in the Whitsunday Sailing Club’s Marline Marine Easter Regatta.

Around 150 sailors, friends and supporters attended the three-day event with many people coming from Mission Beach, Townsville, Mackay and Keppel Bay as well as the Whitsunday Sailing Club.

The fleet included a new division called the ‘green fleet’ which consisted of younger sailors competing for the first time, while the usual classes, including optimists, sabots, tasars, lasers and catamarans, also took part.

Local sailors including Dan Townsend, Aidan Gummow, Tom Sharpe and Ryan Tarver all sailed very well.

Whitsunday Sailing Club congratulates all competitors, and thanks all those who participated in the annual event and thanks Marlin Marine, Embroidery Plus and iSail for their support.

A great way to start Easter!

Invitation Races began on Good Friday afternoon with a clear sunny day and 15 to 18 knots of wind.

28 Boats fronted up for the races, with a good group of Tasars, Corsairs, Lasers of all sizes, a Sailboard, flying 11, 29ers and an Arrow cat. The Arrow streaked away after the start and was chased by the 29ers. Eva Lorenz, with her brother Klaus crewing, had a couple of good races in only her second time on a 29er! Myra Robertson from Mackay sailed her Laser Radial very well to beat most of the fleet. Breianna and Scot Whitehead sailed thier Flying 11 really well after getting the boat only last week.

The wind was gusting up to 20 knots at times, so was a very good test for all. Looking forward to a great weekend.
